Applications Project Engineer
Job Description
Job Title: Applications Project Engineer
Reports to: Engineering Manager – Innovation/Commercial (as projects are assigned)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Pay: $80,000 to $87,000 annual salary
Revision Date: January 10, 2025
Position Summary: The primary responsibility of this position is to support the sales team on new commercial applications utilizing existing technology in new and different ways and ensuring customer satisfaction from concept development through the installation and commissioning of these solutions. This position will collaborate with innovation, design, and controls engineering, as well as operations, supply chain, and the customer to provide all the information and planning needed to deliver solutions on time and budget.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct initial technical reviews of new sales opportunities and provide engineering data to support commercial quotations
- Develop project plans, concept models, descriptive statements, simulations, layouts, budgets, and other presentation materials needed to support commercial and innovation activities
- Verify all pertinent information relative to a project is present for final approvals
- Identify, assess, and manage project risks, planning mitigation strategies, contingencies, and recovery actions with urgency in communication with all stakeholders
- Collaborate to provide technical support to commercial, operations, and supply chain teams, including application, design and manufacturing best-practices of technical solutions
- Prepare job change orders identified during design, production, install/commissioning of projects
- Assist with troubleshooting and problem resolution, maintain customer satisfaction, and ensure proper service levels
- Travel, as required, in support of commercial and innovation activities
- Analyze and define remedies for field problems related to Drake solutions
- Follow company safety policies
- Keep the work area neat and clean
Job Duties:
- Communicate directly with Drake customers and vendors to answer questions, provide assistance, solve problems, and escalate issues with urgency
- Assist sales in customer project planning, technical design reviews, DAT/FAT events, and installation/commissioning
- Provide and maintain project documentation for innovation and commercial projects
- Provide assistance to the engineering staff as directed
Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills and Performance:
- BSME with 2 years design experience or associate’s degree in mechanical technology with 5 years design experience
- CAD proficiency with AutoCAD, SolidWorks or other CAD system
- Strong understanding and experience with formal project management methodologies, certification is an advantage
- Robotics application experience is a plus
- Food plant operations and/or original equipment manufacturing experience is a plus
- Must have good written and oral communication skills

- No direct reports
Physical demands and work environment:
- This position is in an office environment
- This position works 8 hours per day Monday through Friday
- Must be able to sit at a computer terminal for up to 8 hours per day
- Some travel (domestic and international) is required with travel usually being three days or less but may extend up to two weeks. Requirements may include work between the hours of 10:00 pm and 6:00 am in a wet cold (food packaging/plant), high noise levels environment. Weekend travel may be required.

Controls Engineer
Job Description
Job Title: Controls Engineer
Reports to: Engineering Manager – Innovation/Commercial (as projects are assigned)
FLSA Status: Exempt
Pay: $75,000 to $82,000 annual salary
Revision Date: January 10, 2025
Position Summary: The primary responsibility of this position is for the integrity and functional performance of control systems for the equipment manufactured and marketed by Drake. This includes all design and programming responsibilities, manufacturing and testing assistance, adherence to national and international standards, troubleshooting, and guidance and training for engineering, manufacturing, and service personnel. These systems may include the control of servos and robots.
Job Responsibilities:
- Prepare electrical function analysis, wiring diagram schematics, control panel layouts, and other instructions necessary for controlling equipment manufactured and assembled by Drake
- Size and select electrical and electronic components and prepare bills of material for equipment to be purchased or manufactured by Drake
- Write programming code for PLCs, Servos, Panel Views, or other PC based controllers. Maintain accurate program files for all customer orders in a manner that makes the material readily available to all Drake personnel requiring access
- Work with Sales, Engineering, and Manufacturing staffs to ensure the on-schedule manufacturing release of customer order instructions including bills of material and programs
- Perform control troubleshooting with customer and Drake service technicians at job sites and via telephone communication
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge with the requirements of the NEC and UL508A and ensure Drake’s compliance via engineering instructions to manufacturing and service personnel
- Maintain and advance Drake control technology and optimize control design as practical to balance function, features, and manufacturing cost
- Develop new products and process concepts based on original ideas under guidance from a senior engineer
- Follow company safety policies
- Keep the work area neat and clean
Job Duties:
- Assist assembly and service with the in-house testing and troubleshooting of control programs and assemblies
- Assist service and engineering with the field installation and test of new control systems
- Assist Drake personnel and the management staff in all control related activities
Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills and Performance:
- BSEE and minimum of 2 years controls design experience or associate degree with 4 years controls design experience. Extended product knowledge and application experience is beneficial
- Must have programming skills and understanding of software used to program Allen Bradley PLC’s, HMI’s, and Servos. PC program development experience and extensive experience with AB Controls hardware utilizing Ethernet communications is preferred.
- Fanuc Robot programming experience is desired
- CAD proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical, and/or SolidWorks
- Must have good written and oral communication skills

Technical Support Engineer
Job Description
Job Title: Technical Support Engineer
Reports to: Engineering Manager – Innovation/Commercial (as projects are assigned)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Pay: $30.00 to $35.00 per hour
Revision Date: January 10, 2025
Position Summary: The primary responsibility of this position is to act as a liaison between engineering and manufacturing focusing on the transfer of engineering designs into production, accurately, and in a timely manner. This person will be the ERP Super User for the engineering department, working closely with other departments to improve and maintain the accuracy of the data. This role includes design improvements, troubleshooting problems, and providing guidance and product instructions to engineering, manufacturing, and service personnel. The position is responsible for the publication of customer user manuals, including DAT/FAT documents. The position may also assist with new product design.
Job Responsibilities:
- Prepare and interpret SolidWorks CAD layouts and design models for semi-custom food process machinery
- Create, check, and correct detail part drawings from SolidWorks models
- Work closely with production control to assist with the transition of product releases into production.
- Work closely with manufacturing to eliminate manufacturing and assembly problems and to achieve manufacturing and assembly efficiencies and cost savings
- Troubleshoot mechanical design and process problems in Drake’s factory and in Drake customer facilities
- Create and maintain structured bills of material identifying all parts for purchasing, manufacturing, and manufacturing assembly
- Understand, maintain, and improve ERP data and transfers from design models
- Publish customer user manuals, including DAT/FAT documentation and other compliance documents as required
- Analyze and define remedies for field problems related to Drake products
- Follow company safety policies
- Keep the work area neat and clean
